Web design objectives for a musician, band or music group

If you are considering a website for yourself, your band or your music group, your first consideration should be your website's objectives and mission statement. Put simply, what do you want your website to do? The answer to this question provide you with your objectives and mission statement and and will impact upon everything else you do - the size of your site, the number of pages, the look and feel and the functionality.

Ideally, you should list your objectives and try to summarize your website's mission statement in one or two sentences.

Example website mission statements for a musician's or music group website:

'"Provide basic information on myself, my repertoire, my fees and contact details." (A simple 'starter' website)

'"Provide information on myself and my music including a biography, my repertoire, my fees, calendar of events, a gallery of images, music samples and contact details." (A larger website with advanced functionality and support to off-line marketing activities )

"Provides a high quality showcase that aimed at promoting performances and sales of CDs which will excite and motivate visitors and encourage them to return to the site many times. It will include information on myself and my music including a biography, my repertoire, my fees, calendar of events, a gallery of images, music samples, contact details and a blog. The site will achieve at least 50 unique visitors per day and 10 return visitors. Visits to the site will result in 5 sales a day." (A large website with complex functionality, probably supported by a Search Engine Optimisation campaign.)

As you do your research and plan your site, you may be tempted by all kinds of flashy graphics and widgets which can result in a site that is off topic or even confusing for the visitor. If you have a strong mission statement you will find it easier to stay on topic and maintain maintain focus throughout the development process.
